So the problem over there must have been significant. I recall seeing a couple of covers from the 1970's from the Isle of Wight (just off the south coast, near Postmouth), where the Royal Mail had actually applied a specially produced handstamp, along the lines of 'damaged by snails'. It is believed that they are attracted to the gum on envelopes!Īpparently when incidents like this are reported in the UK, the Royal Mail clean out the infested post box and 're-locate' the snails.
